Nat Re Supports Reforestation Efforts in Sierra Madre anew
SINILOAN, Laguna – The National Reinsurance Corporation of the Philippines (Nat Re), in partnership with Fostering Education & Environment for Development, Inc. (FEED), conducted another tree planting activity at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Laguna-Quezon Land Grant on 24 March 2025, adding a total of 2,000 native trees to its expansive reforestation efforts in the Sierra Madre mountain range.
The initiative saw the planting of 2,000 native tree species, including Malaruhat Pula and Balubo, by local forest guards on behalf of Nat Re. The trees were selected for their ecological value, including soil stabilization, biodiversity conservation, and support for endemic wildlife.
The activity was overseen by UPLB Land Grant Forester Rey Lorida and facilitated by staff member Rose Bocado. Proper planting techniques were observed to ensure seedling survival and long-term ecological benefit.
The reforestation effort is part of FEED’s Ridge to Reef Program, which aims to restore upland forests and connect them with coastal ecosystem conservation. By improving forest cover in upland areas, the program helps prevent erosion, improve water retention, and reduce the risk of flooding in low-lying communities. These efforts are complemented by coastal activities such as mangrove and coral rehabilitation.
The program also emphasizes community participation, engaging residents in the reforestation activity. They also received training in sustainable conservation practices. This approach provides livelihood opportunities while fostering long-term environmental stewardship.
Nat Re’s involvement is part of its ongoing collaboration with FEED to promote climate resilience and environmental restoration across the country.
